Fairly simple exercise. Which are the lyrics to old Baptist hymns and which are Black Sabbath lyrics? (answers in comments, further explanation below):
A- In the way a thousand snares lie to take us unawares
Satan, with malicious art watches each unguarded part
but from Satan’s malice free, saints shall soon victorious be.
B- Follow me now, and you will not regret leaving the life you led before we met
You are the first to have this love of mine, forever with me ’till the end of time.
C- Leave the earth to Satan and his slaves, leave them to their future in their grave
Make a home where love is there to stay, Peace and happiness in every day.
D- Now Satan comes with dreadful roar, and threatens to destroy
He worries whom he can’t devour, with a malicious joy.
E- Through the darkness, through the light, through twelve hundred years of night,
but the morning of the day does now appear; see the mighty blood-washed throng,
marching on with shout and song, the full day of final victory draws near.
F- Perhaps you’ll think before you say that God is dead and gone
open your eyes, just realize that he’s the one
the only one who can save you now from all this sin and hate
or will you still jeer at all you hear? yes! I think it’s too late.
Here’s the bizarre reasoning behind this post. As a child, I went to a Southern Baptist Church. While much of it was probably what you imagine, it wasn’t quite snake-handling and tongue-speaking. I came out okay. Anyway, we would always sing these old-time Baptist hymns about being “washed in the blood, etc.” As I grew older and began listening to the music of Black Sabbath and other heavy metal, I noticed many similarities in the lyrics. (Sabbath is very proto-Christian at times.) So I thought, I’d compare, and thus….this post.
